Researchers from the United States and Italy have found that the full extracts of two tomato varieties (San Marzano and Corbarino) can prevent the growth of gastric cancer cells and inhibit their malignant features. The co authors of this study, Professor Antonio Giordano, Director of the Barbaro Molecular Medicine Institute at Temple University in Philadelphia, and colleagues, published their new research findings in the Journal of Cell Physiology.
Previous studies have shown that compounds found in tomatoes, such as lycopene (a type of carotene that makes tomatoes appear red), may help fight cancer. However, researchers noticed that there were few studies on the anti-cancer effect of the entire tomato, so they began to tackle this research gap.
Researchers tested the effects of two tomato extracts, San Marzano and Corbarino, on gastric cancer cell lines. They found that each extract not only prevents the growth of gastric cancer cells, but also interferes with the metastasis of cancer cells.
In addition, researchers have found that the anti-cancer effect of tomato whole extract has not been specifically applied to a specific compound. Their anti-tumor effects do not seem to be related to a specific component (such as lycopene), indicating that the anticancer effect of tomatoes is overall effective.
This research result suggests that tomato whole extract may help prevent and treat gastric cancer.
